Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra XUV500 both are performance oriented entry level SUVs but positioned at two different levels. If you look at their price range the comparison looks unfair. How can we compare two vehicles that have been priced with a difference of almost Rs.10 lakhs. But where they can be kept side by side is in terms of performance, power, and efficiency. The biggest edge that Mahindra XUV500 carries against Toyota Fortuner is the number of features. That is one of the main reasons why these two SUVs are compared closely by buyers. Let’s take a closer look at both the cars.

Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra XUUV500 both are powered by diesel engines. Toyota Fortuner is powered by a 3-liter Common-Rail Diesel Engine that churns 170PS against a peak torque of 343Nm. This engine mates with a 5-speed manual transmission and an automatic transmission. Also, it supports the all-wheel drive of this car. Mahindra XUV500 on the other hand is powered by 2.2-liter mHawk diesel engine that generates power worth 141PS against maximum torque of 330Nm. This engine mates with a 6-speed manual transmission to give desired performance. The power quotient allows Toyota Forutner take an edge over Mahindra XUV500. But it is to be taken care that Toyota Fortuner has a 4WD system while  Mahindra XUV500 has a 2WD system, therefore fuel efficiencies of both will vary to a greater extent.

Toyota Fortuner mileage figures vary according to the kind of transmission it supports. When its 3-liter engine coordinates with an automatic transmission it delivers fuel efficacy of 12kmpl while with manual transmission the same figure goes up to 12.2kmpl. Mahindra XUV500 on the other hand promises mileage of 14kmpl with a 2WD and manual transmission.

Both these cars represent the old school SUV design therefore they resemble each other a lot. Though Mahindra XUV500 looks more aggressive in its approach Toyota Fortuner carries a bright flair of elegance and luxury. Fortuner looks more appealing as its size and height looks bigger and makes you appreciate in first look. XUV500, on the other hand, looks compact, sleek, and modern as compared to Fortuner. Fortuner carries its boxy, traditional, rugged look with all grace and commands great respect as it passes through roads.

In respect to build quality and body strength, Fortuner takes over XUV500. Some of the common favorable features that you will appreciate in both the cars are a +200mm ground clearance, wide wheelbase, body toned door handles, fog lamps, alloy wheels, roof rails, and a few others.

In terms of space and comfort, Mahindra XUV500 gives a tough competition to Toyota Fortuner. Both the cars are seven passenger vehicle with three rows that promise to accommodate your complete family very comfortably.  Fortuner being larger in size allows you to include some luggage behind the three rows of seats, Mahindra XUV500 on the other hand provide foldable rear seats that can help in storing luggage.

The extra luggage space in Fortuner is covered by the extra legroom that provides ample comfort to elderly family members in longer journeys. The all-flat floor of XUV500 is an added feature that adds to extra comfort for all its passengers. XUV500 front seats have lumbar support adjustments and its steering can adjust both ways as rack and reach. Toyota Fortuner on the other hand has just tilt adjustable steering wheel. If you plan to take five or less than that with you XUV500 is your vehicle but if the number extends to seven then Fortuner is your vehicle.
