BMW X1 is one of the best sports utility vehicles in the premium SUV segment in the country. BMW fondly calls it sports activity vehicle. It packs a lot of features at good pricing and is known for its performance from its engine. BMW has recently updated the X1 and launched the latest model of the BMW X1. In our car comparison today we will find out how the new fares against its predecessor.

Looks and design:


The older BMW X1 is a very good car and brings an aggressive front end design which looks absolutely stunning. It has the trademark BMW chromed front grille and a skid plate. It looks contemporary and quite pleasing from various angles. It has an optional panoramic sunroof and has very good quality of build. It looked great from the front to the rear and the fit, finish and paint quality is just fantastic.


The new BMW X1 is as good looking as the older model. It has similar design cues but there have been some changes. It now bears a sportier front bumper with sharper styling. It gets slightly extended bumpers and side skirts and 18 inch alloy double spoke alloy wheels which look fantastic on the car. It has excellent build quality and looks fantastic. It also brings very good quality of paint, fit and finish levels.

Interiors – design, space and features:


The older BMW X1 had great interiors and brought many exciting features in the cabin area. The cabin area itself was very spacious and roomy. It had large windows which gave it a very airy feel inside the cabin. It had excellent seats that gave very good lumbar and back support. It had very good quality of plastics and felt premium like most BMW cars. It came with very good boot space of 430 liters.


The New BMW X1 has interiors that is very similar to the older car and brings modern facilities such as Harman/Kardon speakers, USB/Aux-in, Bluetooth. The highline will only feature the i-Drive. X1 comes with a 4” screen which displays the vehicle functions. It has good quality seats and very good ingress and egress. The ergonomics are easily operated by the driver. The boot space is quite sufficient at 430 liters.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:


The older BMW X1 was available with a 2.0 liter petrol engine that produced 150 BHP and 200 NM of torque and returns an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 11.25 kmpl. The diesel engine variant is a 2.0 liter engine that makes 177 BHP of power and 350 NM of torque and brings a 6 speed automatic transmission and manual transmission. It has an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 15.06 kmpl.


The new BMW X1 brings a 8 speed automatic transmission along with an option for manual transmission and only features the diesel engine. The petrol engine variant has been discontinued and is no longer available. The 2 liters 177 BHP producing diesel engine is a scorcher and produces 350 NM of torque and has excellent drivability. It has been rated by ARAI to deliver 15.06 kmpl of maximum fuel efficiency.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:


The The older BMW X1 has very good ride quality and offers a comfortable driving experience. It brought a very good setup suspension which allowed sporty driving combined with a comfortable ride over good and bad roads. It has an excellent steering setup that gives very good feedback to the driver. It has front and rear disks with 4 channel ABS and EBD and has excellent stopping power to slow you down from high speeds.


The newer BMW X1 has the same suspension setup as its predecessor and rides just as good. It has Dynamic Stability Control – ESP and Dynamic Traction Control for complete control at all times. It has excellent braking package and brings disc brakes on all wheels with 4 channel ABS + EBD. The steering offers excellent feedback just as the older variant and it is a fantastic car for an enthusiastic driver.

Value for money – sticker price, standard features:

The old BMW X1 has been priced from Delhi ex-showroom price for BMW X1 sDrive 18i at 22.40 lakhs for the petrol variant. The diesel engine variant was priced from 24.40 lakhs for the base variant BMW X1 sDrive20D. While the top variant of the BMW X1 sDrive20D Exclusive has been priced at 30.80 lakhs. The pricing was good value for money for a premium SUV from the stable of BMW.

The New BMW X1 is priced competitively and has a starting price of 27.90 lakhs for the BMW X1 sDrive20d. BMW X1 sDrive 20d Sportline is priced at 32.50 lakhs. The top variant in diesel is BMW X1 sDrive 20d xLine and is priced at 32.50 lakhs. The pricing is very competitive and slightly higher than the outgoing variant. There is no petrol engine variant available in the BMW X1 anymore.

The old BMW X1 was a fantastic vehicle to drive and was a lot of fun in the city and on the highways. It had a very good automatic transmission which has been improved in the newer variant. The pricing is still very competitive and will get BMW more sales in the segment. BMW is also continuously improving its after sales backup and that will go in a long way in improving customer satisfaction.
