Hyundai is the second largest car manufacturer in the country and Santa Fe is their only sports utility vehicle in the Indian car market. In our car comparison today we will compare the Hyundai Santa Fe with another able SUV known as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. It is a fantastic sports utility vehicle with many good features. Let’s see how the Santa Fe fares against its rival from the stable of Mitsubishi.

Looks and design:


Hyundai Santa Fe looks very good for a sports utility vehicle with contemporary styling. It does feel a little outdated if compared to the newer rivals in the premium SUV segment. It does not look bland but it not entirely exciting. It has a well designed front end with large headlamps and trendy fog lamps integrated into the bumper. It has very good road presence and Hyundai has done an excellent job with the build quality of the Sante Fe.


Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has a contemporary design which gives it a macho exterior appearance. It has very good looking projector headlamps and chromed grille up front which add to the sporty styling of this sports utility vehicle. It has body colored bumpers with integrated fog lamps and the design is proportionate when looked from the front to the back. It has very good quality of fit and finish.

Interiors – design, space and features:


Hyundai Santa Fe is loaded with interior features and brings very comfortable seats and multi adjustable driver seat. It has a spacious cabin area which feels roomy and airy. It has ample leg and head room for tall passengers. It has features such as the 6CD changer, automatic climate control system and 8 speakers. It also brings cubby holes, bottle holders, glove box and a boot space of 380 liters.


Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has many interior features such as the multi-mode center information display, 2 DIN touch screen stereo system with 6 speakers and the air conditioning is excellent with the smart climate control system. It has comfortable seats that provide good range of adjustability for the driver and passenger. It also brings a spacious boot to carry your entire travel luggage.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:


Hyundai Santa Fe brings a powerful engine with two gearbox options. It has a 2.2 liter diesel engine that makes 194 BHP of power at 3800 RPM and makes a peak torque of 420 NM at 2200 RPM. This engine gives it excellent performance on the highways. It has ample torque for city driving and brings a 4×2 and 4×4 wheel drive options. It has been rated to deliver 14.66 kmpl by ARAI.


Mitsubishi Pajero Sport comes with a 2.5 liter, 2477cc DOHC diesel engine which produces a class leading 175 BHP of maximum power at 4000 RPM and a peak torque of 400 NM from 2000 RPM to 2500 RPM. It has been rated by ARAI to deliver a maximum fuel efficiency of 11 kmpl making it an efficient yet powerful sports utility vehicle.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:


Hyundai Santa Fe brings a well sorted chassis that provides a comfortable driving experience. The suspension absorbs all undulations and bumps our roads will throw at it while ensuring a good ride quality. It is not suited for extreme off-road applications however it had ample ground clearance to go over the worst of our roads. It also brings 4 channel ABS, Traction Control and EBS with powerful brakes for slowing you down from high speeds.


Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has very good suspension setup that ensures it drives it a composed manner at higher speeds. It has a well tuned suspension that works well to keep the bumps in check. It doesn’t throw the passengers around inside the car. It has high ground clearance to go over any kind of speed breaker or pot holes. It has very good brakes which are further assisted by ABS + EBD.

Hyundai Santa Fe has a Delhi ex-showroom price of 22.34 lakhs for the Hyundai Santa Fe 4×2. Hyundai Santa Fe 4×4 is priced at 24.43 lakhs while the most expensive variant with automatic transmission Hyundai Santa Fe 4×4 AT is priced at 25.37 lakhs. Santa Fe is a good sports utility vehicle at price point however it is not very good value for money owing to it slightly outdated design and high price compared to more able competitors.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has been priced from ex-showroom Delhi price of 23.53 lakhs. It is available in a single engine and trim variant. It has good features and performance. It has a reliable engine that is very capable for on and off road performance. The price tag is good for the features it brings. Mitsubishi has a decent network backup in the country with service centers in all major cities.

Hyundai Santa Fe is a very good option to consider in the premium sports utility vehicle segment and brings powerful engine with good performance and quality interiors. It is however slightly dated given the designs of its modern competitors. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a fantastic vehicle in the segment with many great features. It is a reliable sports utility vehicle with a decent price tag.
