Volkswagen in India has been reaching out to the Indian car market with the best and world class products best suited for the Indian requirements. It brings many good features and exciting performance. We compare it to its sibling from Skoda. Skoda Rapid and VW Vento share the same platform but we’ll compare them and tell you the differences between these two. Keep reading to find out more about them.
Looks and design:
Volkswagen needed a good C+ segment car to compete with its rivals and brought in the Vento and it is one of the striking cars from the segment and brings many good features. It has an understated design with neutral lines and looks low slung with a wide stance. It has stylish headlamps and front end design. The build quality on the Volkswagen Vento is top notch and the fit, finish and paint quality is excellent.
Skoda Rapid has good exterior features and courtesy the Vento from which it shares its platform but Skoda has done well to design the Rapid well and given it good looks. The front end resembles the Fabia hatchback in many ways. The large headlamps and fog lamps integrated into the bumper add to the looks of the car. It has 5 spoke alloys which look sporty and the build quality, fit and finish is top notch.

Interiors – design, space and features:
Volkswagen wanted to give their Vento sedan good interior features and hence the dual tone elegant dashboard in a mix of beige and brownish grey looks very good. It has dual air bags for safety, automatic climate control, keyless entry, power windows, electric RVMs, central locking, height adjustable driver seats and it has comfortable seats and spacious cabin. It also brings a good amount of boot space with 500 liters of storage area.
Skoda Rapid brings good interior features and comfortable seats with ample leg and head room inside the very spacious cabin area and has many modern features such as rear AC vents and powerful air con, music system with powerful speakers, anti pinch power windows, automatic climate control, sporty tacho and instrument panel with MID, defogger amongst other features. It has small storage areas such as cubby holes, glove box and boot space of 460 liters.

Engine – performance, power, torque, fuel economy, smoothness:
Volkswagen Vento has a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder petrol engine which produces 104 BHP at 5250 RPM and a maximum torque of 153 NM at 3800 RPM. ARAI has rated this to deliver 15.83 kmpl of fuel efficiency. It also brings a 1.6 liter diesel engine which develops 104 BHP at 4400 RPM and produces a massive torque of 250 NM from 1500 RPM – 2500 RPM. It has been rated to deliver 20.54 kmpl of fuel efficiency as per ARAI rating. Both the engines have excellent drivability.
Skoda Rapid brings a powerful 1.6 liter petrol engine which produces 103 BHP at 5250 RPM and 153 NM of torque at 3800 RPM. It has been rated by ARAI to deliver fuel efficiency of 15.42kmpl for the 5 speed Manual gearbox variant while the Automatic gearbox petrol engine variant delivers 14.4 kmpl as per ARAI rating. The diesel engine variant brings a powerful 1.6 liter engine which is rated to produce 103 BHP of power at 4400 RPM and maximum torque of 250 NM at 1500-2500 RPM. The diesel engine has been rated by ARAI to deliver 20.54 kmpl of fuel efficiency. It comes with a 5 speed manual gearbox.

Suspension – Ride, comfort and handling:
Volkswagen has done a very good job with the suspension setup on their Vento sedan. It has a mature ride quality and comes with slightly stiffer suspension which ensures a stable ride quality and the car feels very planted at all times under varying road conditions. It has a steering unit which gives very good feedback and the Vento sedan also comes with ABS + EBD which helps you slow down quickly with full traction to the wheels.
Skoda Rapid brings very good handling quality and has excellent highway manners and brings a very stable ride quality. It has well tuned suspension and combined with the excellent steering unit which despite bring an electronic unit as opposed to a hydraulic unit offers good feedback. Skoda Rapid has excellent braking performance as well with perfect pedal modulation and ABS + EBD assistance to the driver.

Value for money – sticker price, standard features:
Volkswagen Vento petrol has been priced (ex-showroom Delhi) from 6.99 lakhs for the entry level Vento Petrol Trendline, Vento Petrol Breeze has been priced at 7.84 lakhs while the top end Volkswagen Vento Petrol Highline has been priced at 8.23 lakhs while the automatic transmission version of Vento Petrol Highline AT is priced at 9.21 lakhs. Vento Diesel has been priced from 8.19 lakhs base model Vento Trendline, Vento Breeze has been priced at 9.19 lakhs while the top end Volkswagen Vento Highline has been priced at 9.43 lakhs. VW has better sales and service network in comparison and good product offering.
Skoda Rapid petrol has been priced from (ex-showroom Delhi) 6.90 lakhs for Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI Active, Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI Ambition is priced at 7.35 lakhs, Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI Elegance is priced at 8.25 lakhs, Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI, Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI AT Ambitions is priced at 8.35 lakhs, Skoda Rapid 1.6 MPI AT Elegance is priced at 9.25 lakhs. The diesel variant prices start from 8.15 lakhs for Skoda Rapid 1.6 TDI Active, Skoda Rapid 1.6 TDI Ambition is priced at 8.60 lakhs, Skoda Rapid 1.6 TDI Elegance is priced at 9.50 lakhs. The pricing makes it good value for money considering AT variant is available in two trim levels.

Volkswagen has a solid product at hand and it made fine business sense to let Skoda use the Vento platform to build the Skoda Rapid. Skoda is part of VW so combined sales of both these two cars will add to the sales targets set by the company. VW Vento is a fantastic car with excellent features and the Skoda Rapid brings equally good features and performance at excellent pricing. Skoda needs to improve its after sales service backup.
